Cancer - Symptoms and causes - Mayo Clinic Overview

Overview

Cancer refers to any disease among a large number of diseases characterized by the development of abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissues. Cancer often has the ability to spread throughout the body.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. But survival rates are improving for many types of cancer thanks to improvements in cancer detection, treatment, and prevention.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of cancer vary, depending on which part of the body is affected.

Some general signs and symptoms associated with, but not specific to, cancer include:

·      fatigue

·      A lump or thickened area that can be felt under the skin

·      Weight changes, including unintended weight gain or loss

·      Changes in the skin, such as yellowing, darkening, or redness, sores that do not heal, or changes in existing moles

·      Changes in bowel habits and urination

·      Persistent cough or difficulty breathing

·      Difficulty swallowing

·      hoarseness

·      Persistent indigestion or feeling restless after eating

·      Unexplained persistent pain in joints or muscles

·      Persistent fever or night sweats with no known cause

·      Bleeding or bruising for no known reason

When should you visit a doctor?

Make an appointment if you have any persistent signs or symptoms that worry you.

If you don't have any signs or symptoms but are concerned about your cancer risk, discuss your concerns with your doctor. Ask him which cancer screening tests and procedures are right for you.
